When Should You Take Your Supplements? The Complete Guide to Timing

por Jim Tyer sobre Sep 29, 2026
Various supplements on a kitchen counter

You’ve chosen your supplements. You know how much to take. Then comes another surprisingly common question:

When should I take them?

Morning or night? Before training or after? With food or on an empty stomach? Can you take everything together?

The answer depends on the supplement. For some products, timing can make a meaningful difference. For others, the best time is simply the time you are most likely to remember to take them consistently.

Here’s a practical guide to some of the most popular supplements.

Magnesium: evening is popular, but not essential

Magnesium is often associated with the evening because many people include it as part of their nighttime routine.

For most people, however, there is no requirement to take magnesium at night. The important thing is taking it consistently.

A good time: With dinner or later in the evening.

Taking magnesium with food can also be easier on the stomach for some people.

Different forms of magnesium may also be tolerated differently. Magnesium bisglycinate, for example, is commonly chosen because of its good absorption and gastrointestinal tolerance.

Bottom line: Evening is convenient, but consistency matters more than the clock.

Creatine: before or after training?

This is probably one of the biggest supplement-timing questions.

The good news is that you do not need to obsess over it.

Creatine works primarily by gradually increasing the body's muscle creatine stores. That means taking it every day is considerably more important than taking it at a precise moment around your workout.

Some people take it after training with their post-workout meal or shake. Others add it to their morning routine.

A good time: Whenever you will reliably take it every day.

On rest days? Yes. Creatine is normally taken daily, not just on training days.

Bottom line: Daily consistency beats perfect timing.

Protein: focus on your whole day

The famous “30-minute anabolic window” after training is much less important than it was once made out to be.

Getting enough total protein throughout the day is the priority.

It is generally useful to distribute protein across several meals rather than consuming most of it at once. A protein shake can therefore be particularly convenient when there is a long gap between protein-rich meals or around a workout.

A good time: After training is convenient, but any time you need help reaching your daily protein intake works.

For example:

Breakfast lacking protein? Add a shake.

Training between lunch and dinner? Have one afterwards.

Struggling to hit your protein target? Use a shake whenever it fits your day.

Bottom line: Think about your total daily protein first and timing second.

Pre-workout and caffeine: timing really does matter

Here, timing becomes much more important.

Caffeine generally reaches high blood concentrations around 30–60 minutes after consumption, although individual responses vary.

For that reason, caffeinated pre-workout products are typically taken around 30–60 minutes before training.

But there is another timing consideration: sleep.

Caffeine can remain in your system for many hours. Taking a strong pre-workout late in the afternoon or evening can interfere with sleep—even if you feel that you can fall asleep normally.

And poor sleep can work directly against recovery and training performance.

A good time: Approximately 30–60 minutes before training, while leaving sufficient time before bedtime.

Bottom line: Use caffeine strategically rather than automatically before every workout.

Vitamin D: take it with food

Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so taking it with a meal containing some dietary fat is generally a sensible approach.

Whether that meal is breakfast, lunch or dinner is much less important.

A good time: With a main meal containing some fat.

Bottom line: Take vitamin D with food and choose a time you can maintain consistently.

Multivitamins: usually with a meal

A multivitamin contains several nutrients with different absorption characteristics.

Taking it with food is generally practical because it can improve tolerance and helps with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E and K when they are present.

Some people find multivitamins uncomfortable on an empty stomach.

A good time: Breakfast or lunch with food.

Bottom line: A regular meal is generally preferable to an empty stomach.

Omega-3: take it with a meal

Omega-3 supplements are generally best taken with food, particularly a meal containing fat.

This can aid absorption and can also reduce the unpleasant “fishy” aftertaste some people experience.

If you take several capsules per day, you can also divide them between meals.

A good time: With lunch or dinner.

Bottom line: Take omega-3 with food rather than worrying about morning versus evening.

Collagen: timing is less important than consistency

Collagen is another supplement surrounded by timing questions.

For general supplementation, the time of day is unlikely to be the most important factor. Consistent intake is more relevant.

For people using collagen specifically around exercise and connective-tissue support, taking collagen in the period before training has been studied, often together with vitamin C. However, this does not mean everyone using collagen needs to carefully time it before exercise.

A good time: Whenever it fits your routine.

Bottom line: Don't skip collagen because you missed the supposedly “perfect” time.

Probiotics: follow the specific product instructions

Probiotics are different because products can contain very different microorganisms, formulations and delivery systems.

You will sometimes see recommendations to take probiotics before food, with food or on an empty stomach. There isn't one universal rule that applies to every probiotic.

A good time: Follow the instructions for the specific product.

Storage can also matter. Some strains and formulations require refrigeration, while others are designed to remain stable at room temperature.

Bottom line: With probiotics, the individual product matters more than a universal timing rule.

Iron: timing and interactions matter

Iron deserves special attention because its absorption can be affected by other foods and supplements.

Coffee, tea, calcium and certain foods can reduce iron absorption when consumed at the same time. Vitamin C can improve the absorption of non-haem iron.

However, iron can also cause gastrointestinal discomfort, and it is not a supplement people should generally take unnecessarily.

Bottom line: If you have been advised to take iron, follow the instructions provided by your doctor, pharmacist or dietitian and pay attention to interactions with other supplements and foods.

So, can you take supplements together?

Often, yes.

There is generally no need to spread every supplement across the entire day simply because they are different products.

For example, someone might reasonably take a multivitamin and omega-3 with breakfast, creatine whenever it is convenient, protein around their training or meals, and magnesium in the evening.

There are exceptions—particularly medications, minerals such as iron, or supplements with stimulant ingredients—so more is not always better and individual circumstances matter.

The simple supplement-timing guide

Supplement Practical timing
Magnesium With food; evening is convenient
Creatine Any time; take it consistently every day
Protein Whenever needed to reach daily protein intake
Pre-workout / caffeine Around 30–60 min before exercise
Vitamin D With a meal containing some fat
Multivitamin With a meal
Omega-3 With a meal
Collagen Any consistent time
Probiotics Follow the specific product instructions
Iron According to professional/product guidance; watch interactions

The most important rule: don't overcomplicate it

Supplement timing can help optimise a good routine, but it shouldn't make supplementation complicated.

For most supplements, these factors matter more:

1. Are you taking an appropriate supplement for your needs?
2. Are you taking the right amount?
3. Are you taking it consistently?
4. Is your overall diet supporting your goals?

Get those things right first.

Then worry about whether your creatine goes into the 8:00 a.m. shake or the 6:00 p.m. one.

Smart supplementation should make your routine easier—not more complicated.

This article is for general informational purposes and does not replace individual medical or nutritional advice. If you take medication, have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have been advised to take a specific nutrient because of a deficiency, consult an appropriate healthcare professional about supplementation and timing.
