Do You Really Need a Multivitamin?

by Jim Tyer on Oct 06, 2026
multivitamin surrounded by fresh fruit and vegetables

Walk into almost any pharmacy, health-food shop or supplement store and you'll find shelves full of multivitamins promising to support everything from energy and immunity to overall wellbeing.

But if you eat a reasonably healthy diet, do you actually need one?

The answer isn't a simple yes or no.

A multivitamin can't replace a balanced diet, and taking more vitamins doesn't automatically make you healthier. But depending on your diet, lifestyle, age and individual nutritional needs, a well-formulated multivitamin can be a useful way to help fill nutritional gaps.

Food comes first

Ideally, most of our vitamins and minerals should come from food.

A varied diet containing vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, together with appropriate sources of protein and healthy fats, provides much more than isolated vitamins and minerals. Foods also contain fibre, polyphenols and many other compounds that work together as part of a healthy diet.

That's something a supplement simply can't reproduce.

The clue is in the name: supplements are designed to supplement your diet, not replace it.

But is your diet really as balanced as you think?

This is where things become more complicated.

Knowing what a healthy diet looks like and actually eating one every day are two different things.

Busy schedules, eating away from home, calorie-restricted diets, food preferences and simply repeating the same meals week after week can all reduce dietary variety.

Someone's diet can look perfectly reasonable while still providing less than ideal amounts of certain micronutrients.

A multivitamin isn't a licence to eat badly. But it can provide some additional nutritional coverage when your diet isn't perfect every single day — which, for most of us, is reality.

Who might benefit most from a multivitamin?

There is no universal rule, but a multivitamin may be particularly worth considering for people who:

  • follow a restrictive or low-calorie diet;
  • regularly exclude entire food groups;
  • have a limited or repetitive diet;
  • have increased nutritional requirements at particular stages of life;
  • struggle to consistently eat a varied diet;
  • follow vegetarian or vegan diets and need to pay particular attention to certain micronutrients.

Individual deficiencies are a different matter. If blood tests show that you're deficient in a particular nutrient, a healthcare professional may recommend a specific dose of that nutrient rather than relying on a general multivitamin.

More isn't always better

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding vitamins is that if a little is good, more must be better.

It isn't.

Some vitamins are water-soluble, and excess amounts can often be eliminated by the body. Others — particularly the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K — can be stored.

Minerals also have appropriate intake levels, and unnecessarily high doses aren't automatically beneficial.

This is one reason why a good everyday multivitamin shouldn't be judged by how enormous the percentages on the label are.

A 1,000% NRV isn't automatically ten times better than 100%.

The objective should be sensible nutritional support, not simply the biggest numbers manufacturers can fit on the packaging.

What should you look for in a multivitamin?

Start with the nutritional information rather than the marketing claims on the front.

Look at which vitamins and minerals are actually included, the quantities per daily dose and their percentage of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV).

Also consider your existing diet and any other supplements you're already taking. It's surprisingly easy to consume the same nutrient from several different products without realising it.

And don't assume that a product containing dozens of ingredients is automatically better. A thoughtful formulation at appropriate doses is generally more useful than a very long ingredient list designed primarily to look impressive.

Tablets, capsules or liquid — does it matter?

Multivitamins come in many formats, including tablets, capsules, gummies, powders and liquids.

The most important factors are the formulation, appropriate dosing and whether you'll actually take the product consistently.

A liquid multivitamin can be particularly convenient for people who don't like swallowing tablets or who simply prefer adding a daily dose to their routine. But being liquid doesn't magically make an otherwise poor formulation superior.

As always, look beyond the format and examine what you're actually getting.

Can a multivitamin give you more energy?

This is another area where terminology can be misleading.

Several vitamins and minerals contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism, but vitamins themselves don't provide energy in the same way that carbohydrates, fats and proteins provide calories.

If your diet is deficient in a nutrient involved in normal energy metabolism, correcting that deficiency may make a meaningful difference.

But taking increasingly large quantities of vitamins won't turn a well-nourished person into an energy machine.

Sleep, nutrition, physical activity, recovery and overall lifestyle still matter.

So, do you really need one?

Maybe — but probably not for the reason supplement advertising sometimes suggests.

If you consistently eat a varied, nutrient-rich diet that meets all of your nutritional requirements, a multivitamin may offer relatively little additional benefit.

If your diet isn't always as varied or consistent as you'd like, however, a well-designed multivitamin can be a practical way to complement it and help ensure you're covering your nutritional bases.

Think of it as nutritional backup, not nutritional insurance against a bad diet.

The foundation remains the same: eat well, stay active, sleep properly and build healthy habits you can maintain.

Supplements come afterwards.

A simple way to complement your diet

If you decide that a multivitamin makes sense for you, B Maximum Ultra+ Multivitamin Liquid offers a convenient way to complement a varied, balanced diet. Its liquid format makes it easy to incorporate into your daily routine, with a 15 ml daily serving and a tropical fruit flavour. Like any supplement, Ultra+ isn't intended to replace good nutrition — it's designed to complement it, helping provide consistent daily micronutrient support when your diet doesn't always cover every base.

B Maximum — intelligent nutrition for fitness and health.

Live your maximum life.
